Arts & Crafts Style Basement

Structure: Full Two-Story w/Lookout Basement

Originally Built: 2001

Situation: With the addition of two children, the upper levels of the home began to fill with baby furniture and children's toys. In addition, the clients desired a space more suitable for less formal gatherings and parties that could include a variety of entertainment types.

Objective: Layout the basement to incorporate a home theater area, a ‘walk-behind’ bar, a gas fireplace, a game table area and/or dart board lane, a playroom that can easily be modified into a bedroom later, and finally a ¾ bath.

Solution: With the basement area to be finished varying in width, the widest area was slotted for the Home Entertainment Center. Because of the large maple entertainment center housing a 50” LCD HDTV television, there needed to be some room in front of it to accommodate the sectional-style couch at a comfortable distance from the set. The next, widest part of the basement seemed to perfectly fit the walk-behind bar and stone fireplace on opposite walls from each other. This left a comfortable walkway to for access to the game area and playroom, both of which fit nicely in the more narrow (still13’ wide) end of the basement. The bath had already been rough’d in to its own space adjacent to the bar and game area.

Outcome: A stylish arts-and-crafts basement including darkened maple cabinets with “shaker” (flat) panel doors, dovetailed drawer boxes and rollout trays/shelves; solid 6-panel doors including a 9-panel craftsman style French into the playroom; A heavy cultured stone fireplace with angled chase; a two-tier serving bar with sink and refrigerator; a tile shower stall and glass enclosure; and tile & Berber floors throughout.
